Trent-Severn Locks Open for 2025

The wait is over for boating enthusiasts! Today marks the official opening of the Trent-Severn Waterway for the 2025 navigation season. Parks Canada has opened all lock-stations along this historic route, welcoming visitors to experience one of Ontario's most cherished waterways.

Opening day!

As of today, all lockstations are fully operational and following an early-season schedule. Parks Canada staff are on hand to assist boaters through the locks and provide valuable information about the waterway's attractions.

Important Notes for Early-Season Navigation:

  • Some areas have higher-than-average water flows due to spring conditions
  • Floating debris may still be present in the waterway after this years ice storm
  • Some navigation aids may be temporarily off-station
  • Certain dam safety booms are undergoing repairs following spring damage

Despite these seasonal challenges, the waterway is ready for navigation, with all services available to visitors.

2025 Operating Schedule

The waterway will remain open from May 16 to October 13, with varying hours throughout the season:

May 16 - June 19 (Early Season)

  • Monday to Thursday: 10:00 am – 3:30 pm
  • Friday to Sunday and Victoria Day (May 19): 9:00 am – 6:30 pm

June 20 - September 1 (Peak Season)

  • Monday to Thursday: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm
  • Friday to Sunday and holidays (Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day): 9:00 am – 6:30 pm

September 2 - October 13 (Late Season)

  • Monday to Friday: 10:00 am – 3:30 pm
  • Saturday to Sunday and Thanksgiving (October 13): 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

Reminder for Boaters: On any given day, you must arrive at the designated blue zone by the final lockage time. At swing bridges, the last bridge swing is scheduled for 10 minutes after the last lockage time.

Safety Considerations

Parks Canada reminds all waterway users to boat responsibly and be mindful of their impact on others. Specifically, boaters are advised to watch their wake and wash near shorelines to avoid damage to docks, boats, and property. This is particularly important in narrow passages and near residential areas, where wake can cause erosion and property damage.

Planning Your Trent-Severn Adventure

Visitors planning to navigate the Trent-Severn Waterway in 2025 have several permit options available. Seasonal lockage and mooring permits can be purchased online before departure or at any lockstation upon arrival. For paddlers, Parks Canada is offering a special 50% discount on seasonal lockage permits for canoes and kayaks, valid for the entire 2025 navigation season

The permit system accommodates various types of watercraft and usage patterns, from single-day passages to season-long access. Lockstation staff can provide detailed information about permit options and help visitors select the most appropriate choice for their planned activities.

Visitor Information

Throughout the waterway, 42 historic lockstations serve as visitor service centers where travelers can obtain information, permits, and assistance. Many lockstations offer amenities such as restrooms, picnic areas, and interpretive displays that explain the history and operation of the lock system.

The opening of the Trent-Severn Waterway's 105th navigation season represents the continuation of a storied tradition in central Ontario. This network of locks, canals, and rivers offers a unique opportunity to experience Canadian heritage while enjoying breathtaking natural beauty.
